I’m temporarily unemployed in NY. My wife is a grad student and her college offers health insurance for both of us for about $6000 a year - $2000 for her and $4000 for me. We can afford it but we were looking for some cheaper alternatives. Could anybody suggest any good deal?

You don't indicate what your ages are, but the total cost of $500 per month could be high for the benefit your plan provides.
