My neighbour has caused considerable damage by having a water pipe leak for three months. He's not willing to give me information on his insurance company. How do I get this information?

Which state are you from? You can enquire at your state insurance department. They may help you in obtaining information on the other party's insurance.

Hi wet homeowner, if you stay in Florida, you can obtain the necessary information from the following department.

Bureau of Financial Responsibility
2900 Apalachee Parkway, Room A212, MS-98
Tallahassee, Florida 32399-0585.

Mail them your request with necessary information, like-name and address of the neighbor, and they will let you know the details.

If you don't reside in Florida, then I'm sure that there is a department in your state also where you can obtain such information.

Good morning wet homeowner, and welcome to the community...

This really sucks, I'm sorry not only for the mess and damage but that you have a jerk for a neighbor that's really does bite. I really don't know how you would find this out...I'm not aware of state depts of ins providing this information (that doesn't mean they don't I just didn't know this)...

Think I would try your city or county's recorder of deeds to see if that information could be there, although I seriously doubt it...I do know a probable sure fire way to flush this information out...file a small claims suit for your damages, he will (or should) beat a fast path to his insurance company with that summons....

You don't say the nature of the damage, but another suggestion would be to contact your city or county inspectors, or haz mat team...You'll likely have to start maybe with the water or sewer company...and they should be able to direct you to the appropriate agency, they also may be assist with this......Another idea is to file a claim with your homeowners insurance company, not knowing all the facts I'm not saying there would be coverage for this, but even if they deny the claim they will likely contact him, take a statement and perhaps get this information for you.

Please let us know a little more about the scope of your damages, exactly what is leaking and so on. Perhaps then we can provide more assistance to you.

What a rotten neighbor you have there, wet homeowner! You have my sympathy. You've had some great advice already but I was wondering if perhaps the neighbor is renting as opposed to being a homeowner.

Is there any way you could find out if there's a landlord listed as being responsible for that property? It could well be that's why they won't give you the information. They don't know and/or haven't reported it to their landlord.

I sincerely hope it's not because they don't have any insurance at all. At least if there is a landlord involved you might have more luck getting hold of him instead of battling with your neighbor.

I hope some kind of action will be taken to get it fixed soon for you, wet homeowner. Good luck.
