My mother was in an accident in June, 2008 and hit a UPS truck. Her insurance had been cancelled and she has been in the hospital, then a nursing home since that time. The accident was her fault. I just received a bill from UPS for $30,000 to pay for the accident. How can I verify the amount? It seems just way too high.

Call and ask for a copy of the repair bill. They should not have any problem sending it to you.

If there is an admin fee in there somewhere, it's not owed. UPS has a duty to prove their loss. Though, I think this is the least of your mothers worries.

I have the bill which has three pages of itemized figures. There is a column which lists "New" and "Existing" I am being charged for both. It seems that the existing was damage that was already there and yes, there was a charge for admin fee - almost $2,000. How can I tell if this could have been repaired at a less costly rate?

Wow, $2,000 admin fee? They have high hopes if they expect someone to pay that nonsense fee. It sounds like a body shop estimate though from my experience. Perhaps you could stop in at a local shop and ask if it seems pretty reliable and whatnot?

How severe was the damage? Those big panels certainly cannot cost that much unless their friggin' bulletproof! I'd get a second opinion from a professional for sure.

As mentioned, she does not owe the admin fee and I doubt UPS will give anyone any grief over it not being paid. Without seeing the bill, I'd agree that it sounds like "existing" was prior damage that they just had repaired at the same time. Only way you can know if the charges are reasonable is to have someone who repairs that type of vehicle look it over. Perhaps offer to pay someone $20 if they would review it for a few minutes.

When it's all said and done, I'd certainly call UPS, confirm that they were trying to bill your mother, who is in a nursing home, for unrelated damages. Tell them the $2000 admin fee is not only insulting but its also not owed and then see if they would be willing to cut their bill as your mother cannot pay the entire thing. They might be willing to lower it in return for a promise to pay if they don't think they will get any of it otherwise.
