Long Term Care or Medicare - Which is better?

by moms ins » Tue Mar 25, 2008 01:19 pm

My mom infomed me yesterday that as of 4/30/08 she will no longer have health ins from secure horizon which use to be united health care last year thru solutia. Something about a law suit that soluita had. My mom is 77 and has all kind of health problems. Is this even legal to just drop her like this? What are her options, its only a month away.

I dont think half the people on this thread know what your talking about. Your mom is on Medicare, she will always have medicare as long as she is paying her part B premium. Worst case scenario her medicare will cover her. WIth her being dropped out of a Medicare Advantage she can enroll in another plan or have a Medicare Supplement with no health questions.
If she is really sick look into paying monthly for a sup... This might turn out to be a blessing.

I am glad someone jumped in their and gave the op a direction to go. Hopefully her mother will continue to recieve some typew of care even if it does cost a little monthly. I know there are probaly alot of pros and cons to my next thought but I think once you reach a certain age that medical and dental should be provided free of charge. these people are mostly all struggling along finacially, it would sure help.

Medicare primary, pick up a supplement if one can be afforded, or just take a Medicare Advantage Plan in her area. Alot of these plans cost nothing, but are area specific.

what is a medicare advantage plan? do they replace medicare as primary insurance? what is a medicare supplement plan? does it take the place of medicare?

Interesting post: "Medicare advantage plans are better than having just original medicare and dont cost nearly as much as supplement plans, some are even free depending on what area you live in the just dont cover quite as good as supplements."

Also look into seeing if she qualifies for any level of medicaid through your local depatment of social services dept. There are also medicare advantage plans specially for people who have medicare and also qualify for medicaid. These are called dual eligible plans. Secure horizons is called evercare.

Check out medicare.gov they have a place where you can type in her zip code and it will bring up all supplements and medicare advantage plans in her area along with the costs.

I have heard of dual eligible plans. I think Elderplan has one of those policies. But what exactly is it? Does it mean that primary insurance Let's say Medicare and the Medicare covered items and secondary insurance Medicaid and Medicaid covered items are paid 100% by that insurance with the dual eligible plan? Or does it mean that the certain items bill to Medicaid and some bill to Medicare and since the patient has both Medicare and Medicaid, the dual eligible plan will cover both Medicare and Medicaid billed items?

What is the difference between a Medicare Advantage policy and a supplement plan?

Also what does the guest mean by "Secure horizons is called evercare?"
