Many states have a “fraud tip line” where consumers can anonymously report insurance fraud.

Most state laws provide immunity from civil action when a person reports "suspected" insurance fraud, even if an investigation later reveals that no fraud occurred. The investigated person might want to sue the "reporter" for the inconvenience that was caused. As long as the report was not malicious, there is no cause of action that could be sustained in civil court.

Insurance companies are supposed to investigate and report suspected insurance fraud to the state Dept of Insurance. Your report to the insurance company or directly to the Dept of Insurance should not be taken lightly.
