Federal plan to cover abortion

Do we have things like abortion to be covered by a Federal plan (or other subsidized private plans) under the health care reform laws? It would be of great help if we come to know about the possibilities, the goods and the bads. What do you think?

Even though abortion is not unlawful, the federal government is adamantly opposed to the use of federal dollars to pay for "elective abortions". If the mother's life in in imminent danger, then the money can be used to pay for the procedure. Obamacare has done nothing to change this.

Many states use their own money under Medicaid to pay for elective abortions. Some personal/group health insurance policies will cover the cost of elective abortion.

It's mostly a matter of religious ethics rather than law.

Max,

What is an elective abortion? and what do you mean by "If the mother's life in in imminent danger, then the money can be used to pay for the procedure". do you mean federal government will pay in this case?

Elective abortion? That's what the Supreme Court said was no longer a crime in its decision in Roe v Wade in the 1970s. Just like elective cosmetic surgery, it's something someone WANTS but does not require to survive.

When a person's life is in imminent danger, it means they are about to die. Many things can go wrong with a woman's pregnancy and endanger the life of the mother while not necessarily endangering the life of the fetus.

Federal law prevents using Medicaid (or Medicare) dollars for an elective abortion, but those same dollars can be used to save the life of the mother by aborting the pregnancy, terminating the life of the fetus. The mother is (potentially) a taxpayer today. The child won't be one in all likelihood for 18-20 years (maybe even 26-29 years courtesy of Obamacare).
