death claims

How can you find out if your ex- husband continued paying on insurance policies that were started during the marriage and who the beneficiaries are of all policies when they have died? I cannot get any information because I am the ex, but if my children are entitled to anything it would greatly help since they are all under 18. This is in the state of PA. Thank you.

You send the death certificate to the insurance companies, and they'll send the checks to the approrpriate people (i.e. the people named as beneficiaries on the policies).

If you are not either owner or beneficiary, the insurance company will not talk to you about policy specifics. They will contact the beneficiary if you call them and tell them the insured has died. They'll typically even take new contact information for the beneficiaries is need be.

If you believe the children are beneficiaries, it would make sense for you to send notice of death to the insurance companies.

If the children are beneficiaries, and not yet legal majority, they cannot accept the funds. Instead they are placed in a trust administered by the state, which requires a court order submitted by the beneficiaries' (childrens') parent or legal guardian.

BNTRS has everything in his reply. So, you need to submit a court order if your children are the beneficiaries (assuming you're their legal guardian). Did you try consulting your ex-husband's insurance agent? If you can't get in touch with him, you may also pay for MIB's policy locator service. It has helped in locating policies for so many people in the past.

True..insurance agents, colleagues and trusted friends some times have more information about our insurance policies than our wives and children. I'll try a professional service in the end since they charge a lot for it. I'd rather go through my spouse's files in search of documents. I might come across the contact number of the agent if I look through his phone book.
