I have plans to buy a house which has a creek way up behind the backyard. Do I need to think about getting a flood insurance?

In my opinion, you should consider buying a flood insurance. According to FEMA, people residing in low to moderate risk flood areas, also make considerable amount of flood claims.
Moreover flooding doesn’t occur only in areas along the banks of water bodies (as in your case), it may also happen due other natural perils such as hurricanes, heavy rains as well as faulty drainage system.
