Ins gave $17,000 to side our house and then depreciated it to 12,000. if I end up siding it for less than $12,000 can I still get the money they held for depreciation?

You may be able to keep the extra money and get someone to do the work for less.
But you'll have to make sure the work's done properly, which might not be done for less.
if the work's not done properly, then your insurer might deny future claims for not maintaining your house properly.
Also if your insurer asks for the receipts and documents for the repairs, you might get into trouble for not spending the entire amount for the meant purpose.
