I have a home insurance and am doubtful whether I’ll get properly paid on the occasion of my claims if I need to. I’ve heard a lot about claims discrepancies from friends and family. If anyone can let me know about any kind of precautions to take while making an insurance claim, I would be really glad. Thanks in advance!

If you have an insured loss, the one thing you want to do is be truthful when making your claim. People get into serious trouble by lying to the insurance company about what was lost, and what its value was. So just be honest and give the insurance company all the facts.

Until then, the best advice anyone here can give you is to read and understand your policy -- what it covers and what it does not cover. Asking for payment of a loss that is not covered by the policy is the single biggest reason people don't get their claims paid.

When you need to make a claim, make sure you inform your insurer at the earliest giving all the information about the nature of your claim.

Gather and keep all documents and receipts and make them available to the insurer when asked for.

A claims adjuster may be evaluating your loss, until he arrives in the mean time try to prevent additional damages if possible, for example, if a pipe bursts, shut off the water supply.

Apart from this, as MaxHerr mentioned already, it’s best to know your coverage and be truthful while making a claim.
Also, keep in mind the amount of your deductibles before making any small claims.

This is a standard requirement of all property policies. Failure to understand and abide by this can cause some or all of a claim to be denied.
