I have a car that currently has no insurance and is not registered in Massachusetts. Can my brother add my car to his insurance policy and add my name to it, and would i be able to register the car in my name?

This is one of the most common queries people like you have when they are shopping for an auto insurance policy. So, here are some of the basic rules of insurance policies:

• In order to insure your car, your brother must have an insurable interest. The car must be titled in his name and so, he’ll be the one who’ll have to bear the cost of loss or damage to the vehicle. He should be the one who’ll have to face legal issues and may even get sued.

• Your brother cannot insure a vehicle that is not owned by him or if it is registered in your name.

Lastly, there’ll be no coverage and your claims may be denied since your brother will not be considered as the legitimate owner of the car.

That's not entirely true. Siblings living in the same household may obtain coverage under the same policy with some insurance companies, regardless of who owns what or how it's registered.

The vehicle does not have to be titled in someone's name to have insurable interest.
