|

| LAPD is known to be slow with providing accident reports to insurance companies. Sometimes they stamp them Do Not Release. The insurance company says they can't send us a copy if that happens. Not even to the driver or other person involved in the accident. Makes no sense. Why does LAPD do that?!!! |

Probably that falls within their safety measures. I've seen such instances whenever any accident report gets categorized under a criminal investigation. It could be undercover for any form of legal investigation as well. Being "slow" would some times indicate being critical. And I feel thats what is sometimes needed to eliminate all possible security lapses.
Thanks,

Hi I have reasons to believe that the LAPD officers do it as a step to meet the financial disclosure requirements laid by the Police commission & the city council. Traffic accident reports can be handed over only to the authorized persons. It has been specifically stated under the Vehicle code Section 20012 that such an authority is to be given only to the victim or the victim's representative. I believe you'd need to pay a small amount worth $23.00, which would be a non-refundable expense towards searching the records. | for some reason the law seems to have ways around everything but if you make a lot of noise i dont think they are allowed to refuse you a report .you can go online and look up criminal records so whats the big deal on accidents. i think people need to insist on thier rights or we will soon live in communist . |

| I called the recorded message to get instructions and have ordered the accident report by mail. (Insurance company said we had to go downtown in person -- not true, can't get it that way.) However.....due to "serious system complications" and "personnel shortages" there will be a 12-week response time. Normal is 30 days, according to what the Officer had told us. No way of knowing yet if the report will actually be released to us, of course. |

jeesh, what a pain in the rearend just to get a copy of the paperwork, that is a shame, It is screwed up that your insurance company will not give you a copy of the report.
I hope you can get your hands on a copy soon, are you okay from the accident? |

| Family member's accident. Still waiting on medical tests. Insurance co. doesn't yet have report to send us, but said they can't anyway if it arrives stamped as "Do Not Release." LAPD website had previously rejected my DNR explanation inquiry 3 times as "spam". Currently waiting to hear from webmaster before calling toll-free number provided above! (Attitude may mutate.) Neighborhood Watch Officer has now changed 3 times in 4 or 5 months, or I'd ask him/her. Definitely have personnel shortages in the dept. |

| Spoke with a different member of our insurance claims team. He says that the 12-week response time is Normal for LAPD! Guess the officers on the street are telling folks 30 days to keep from upsetting them even more. |

The police need to investigate it thourghly to make sure who is, and is not, at fault. If every Tom, Dick and Harry could see the details on a car accident, then the wrong person might wind up with the dirty end of the stick because they don't know how to properly read and analyze a report.
And what does Communism have to do with that? Last I checked, communism is common ownership of certain property.

Yeah right, the police get plenty of funding, I'm sure they're just sitting on it until you forget about it in 6 weeks. They can afford to fix a system no bother, if they don't, then they're not keeping up with the laws regarding data. _________________ I have a new personal crusade. | I finally got to speak with a live LAPD person several weeks ago. The Officer said they don't stamp traffic reports Do Not Release, so I guess the insurance employee was wrong. DNR is only for certain crimes, especially when children are involved. But it's been 12 weeks+ and we still don't have a copy of the accident report from our insurance company. (Our own copy won't arrive directly for at least another 30 days, since it was ordered later out of frustration. $23 down the drain.) Guess I get to make yet another phone call tomorrow, especially since we got a letter stating the insurance company had completed its investigation and made its decision. Excuse me? Where's the report? |

That makes sense that the DNR would be on criminal offenses that are being investigated, it would hinder the investigation if too much information would be leaked out to the public.
I think protecting the young children is the right thing to do also, I know here in pennsylvania, once the crime is tried in court you can access all records via public records online free of charge. |

| I love Columbus Ohio PD. You can go on line and view and print every crash report and most other reports except those involving minors or domestic violence. They are also posted in less then 3 days of the incident. State Highway Patrol reports can be ordered online with photos and received in about a week. |

| Forgot to follow up that I did finally get copies of the accident report after several more weeks went by. The copy from the insurance company had other people's names blacked out. The one from LAPD did not. |
