I live in Alabama and my 16 yr old Granddaughter borrowed my car to run an errand for me and got into an accident. Since she does not have auto insurance in her name Geico Ins automatically put her on my insurance policy without my permission and sent me a new bill in the mail. That is how I found out she was added. She does NOT live in my home nor do I want her on there. They are telling me if I dont pay the new bill they will cancel me. Can they do that?

I'm going to go out on a short limb here and answer this. Keep in mind, I'm much less sure about my answer on this subject then others.

If you don't pay a bill, yes they will cancel you. Should they be able to charge you a premium for your grand daughter? I don't think so. But perhaps they don't understand the situation. Have you explained to your agent that your grand daughter does not live with you and that she does not have regular access to your vehicle? If you did, you need to make sure the underwriter at GEICO knows this. If nothing else, I'd think you should be able to sign an exclusion of coverage form stating that GEICO does not need to provide coverage if your grand daughter drives your vehicle in the future (many carriers won't do this as they have to provide liability coverage anyway). Again, if what they are doing is not correct, I'd say that someone on their end does not understand your grand daughter does not live in your home and does not have regular access to your vehicle.

Also, is she listed on someone else's policy? If so, providing GEICO with confirmation of this might help your situation.

There are carriers (or adjusters) that will send in an underwriting alert when a non-rated driver wrecks a car...I agree though she shouldn't be rated on yours, and this applies only when a vehicle is used more than occasionally or the driver is a member of the household...IMO were I you, I would call the underwriting dept. directly and explain this situation...if she is rated on her parents car or has one of her own (which surely she is right?) then that should clear it up once you explain the living arrangements...if not offer to exclude her if your state and company allow this...but be forewarned she can never ever drive that vehicle again, because there will not be coverage (in my state if you are exclude the carriers do NOT have to provide coverage)....please let us know what you find out.

Absolutely, I don't see any reason how they could add someone to your policy (especially when the person is not included in your household). I understand they have the right to cancel or transfer your policy...but how can they add someone else beyond your knowledge!

they ''can'' although they ''shouldn't '' have without the correct knowledge...they ''did'' because her grand daughter was driving the vehicle and had an accident.
