Does any one know the significance of having Pork and Kraut for new years, we have always done this and I have never questioned the meaning behind it, LOL. Just wondering if anyone knows.

Food for a new years dinner. Do you have anything in particular that your family eats on this day?

Andy some people think that you need to eat certain things on the first day of the new year for good luck/health whatever....Apparently goodnatured has heard of eating Pork and Kraut but didn't know the significance of it...as I said my grandma's (actually it was her mother that insisted on it and was very superstious) that you MUST at some point on Jan 1st eat black eyed peas for good luck...think that one is pretty common and most people have heard of that...I've even seen cans of blackeyed peas on graves the first of the year! Shocked Laughing So she was wondering if anyone else had any new year traditions, about eating certain things and what their significance was....

here is a new years eve recipe for the black eye pea.

Black-eyed peas with sausage and barbecue sauce

1 pound dried black-eyed peas
1 pound link sausage, or your favorite
1 small onion, chopped
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup prepared barbecue sauce
Prep:
Rinse, prepare, soak, and cook peas in about 3 cups water, following directions on the package. Drain and reserve half of the cooking liquid. In a skillet over medium heat, brown sausage and onions; drain off excess fat.
Place peas in a 3-quart casserole; add sausage and onions. Stir in reserved liquid, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and barbecue sauce. Bake at 300° for 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

any may you have much luck through out the year, Lori, seems your grandmother has had good health and lots of luck with her age, hope you have the same.

A little late with this one. Pork and kraut is a German/Dutch New Years Tradition. It is said that a pig is a sign of going forward because on their eating habits. Kraut is a form of cabbage which symbolizes wealth. Come over to the debt forum. All the foodies are over there. We have Pork and Kraut every New Years. My mother was of Dutch and Germa extraction
