I'm not too sure of my rights when it comes to the federal laws concerning HIPAA. I'd wonder why each time I visit a healthcare unit, I need to sign the agreement. Do the doctors need to go for such agreements time and again? _________________ Register Now to have your Insurance queries solved. |

It's due to the "Notice of Privacy Practices". It's actually a notice which describes how your medical information could be used by the health service providers. All about it is clearly stated in your HIPAA agreement.

You need to sign an agreement each time you visit a healthcare unit as according to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), you are to be given the "Notice of Privacy Practices" statement which belongs to the facility provider you have an appointment with. The notice mentions how the healthcare provider gets to use your personal medical information and to whom he might give this information.

If you'd visit a particular health care unit regularly, you'd just need to sign your HIPAA papers for once. Thereafter, it resides in the file that bears your health documents. Depending on the policies of various health care units you may need to sign such papers every time you'd pay a visit.

Medical professionals would also need to get into such agreements every year. They have to disclose that they're fully aware of the laws and they'd follow them in practice. Such agreements are kept inside files within their work place. All states have their individual requirements, but the basic laws are the same.

Be sure of your HIPAA rights. You could check or copy your records. State any necessary correction that needs to be done (include it in the chart). You'll get informed in the event your medical information needs to be conveyed to healthcare service providers, insurers etc. You may register complaints under circumstances that you feel your rights have been violated.

Please remember that any information that's shared electronically or otherwise would be governed by the HIPAA privacy act. Different health related information e.g. medical tests, diagnosis, visits to offices as well as certain other procedures that form a part of medical care are also protected under it. It also controls certain aspects of mental healthcare e.g. psychological counseling, therapies etc.
