On Friday October 4th our Bounder was burglarized, while sitting within 6 feet of the house. The police were called and a report was filed. Then the insurance company was contacted. Much to our surprise, very little was covered. I made the mistake of telling my agent that I wanted insurance on the MH and took what he sold me. DUH! The $500 personal coverage on the MH excluded any devices capable of transmitting or receiving RF. That eliminates any coverage on computers with WiFi, cell phone, GPS, or CB. My agent, of 25 years, and I were under the impression that Homeowners would cover most personal items in the MH. That was not the case. American Family Home Owners Insurance has exclusions for MHs that exclude any items plugged into the MH, such as computers and peripherals, GPS, cell phone, CB, cameras on chargers, rechargeable lantern, etc. As it turns out, American Family Insurance has NO provisions for covering the electronic toys that most of us carry in our MHs. So beware, read all of the fine print of your policy. THE BIG PRINT GIVETH...the small print taketh away. I took a $3000 hit by trusting my agent. Yes, I'm in the process of moving all my insurance to a new provider. Education is expensive

Our homeowner's policy does cover contents in MH - no exclusions for RF stuff, etc. And we also have the ability to add additional contents coverage.

As you said, their small print excluded it.

That really sucks.

I'm sorry.

It does really suck and I am also sorry. I am a little disappointed to hear that you found this out all too late. Sometimes we are not as covered as we think we are and it takes something like this to bring it to light. Since it is too late to really do anything now I would suggest going over your policy with your agent and see what better coverages is out there. A little lergwork from you and your agent will hpefully keep you better protected in the future.Good Luck.

That makes a little more sense then what I was thinking.

OP,

exclude any items plugged into the MH
Only thing I can think of... were those items actually plugged in or just being stored? Just a thought.

Hi! what about the auto insurance policy??? If the OP is referring to the Motor Hom, as we all are guessing, then doesn't the motor home receive coverage under the auto policy?

I guess not, in fact most auto insurer will exclude Motor Homes in their policies. The insurers treat Motor Homes differently from the passenger cars, because MHs may experience a different set of perils then the passenger vehicles. Its also said that the MHs are at greater risk of accident because of the size and most of the time the drivers aren't accustomed to driver such large vehicles and therefore are at greater risk of collisions.

However, if your auto insurer extends the coverage to the rented vehicles then it may cover the Motor Homes or the recreational Vehicles as well, but it may only apply if you carry higher limits.

Hope it clarifies Smile

The homeowners policy may cover the content in the RV upto a certain limit but that may not suffice the need of the homeowner. Hence, he/she is required to seek coverage specially designed to protect special homes like motor home.

The recreational vehicle coverage combines the features of both auto and homeowners policies, includes coverage against perils like- fire, theft, vandalism, landslides, hail and windstorm. It also covers losses due to collision.
