Can we claim on neighbor and affects them how?

Hi My husband was helping a neighbor fall some trees that were damaged in a storm we had. Some freak thing happened and the tree fell the wrong way and crushed his ankle. Amazing nothing broke. But the bruising is severe and it infected as well. Now he needs to be off work 3 weeks at least. Can we file a claim on the property insurance and how will it affect our neighbor, we don't want to seem greedy or mean but we have a child to support and he can't work. It's really important that I also know the effects a claim has on them we don't want a war with neighbors. If it's like a car accident claim and your premium rises just a little or is it more?

Lori asked: Does that mean that an unpaid claim too would continue affecting all my future premiums?

Effects premium for 5 years in my state of MO. I finally got a "no claims discount" from insurer on my primary residence homeowners policy 5 years after a hot water heater claim on a landlord policy for a non-owner occupied home.

Hi Steven and Forum Members,
You're welcome, and I also appreciate the information on the forums. In closing, I thought it ironic that Sunday's business section in newspaper listed new consumer info. resources for insurance companies (auto, home, life, etc.) in MO and IL. I've posted them to the forum but list them again below. These are not exhaustive, but good tools to use when considering your selection of surers.

Just an FYI...

Every state has their own Dept of Ins. and governing bodys..and all have websites...in fact I think we too have a listing on this site, at any rate...if you google, (pick a) "state department of insurance"..you'll get there..
