Claim for property lost on holiday on my home Insurance

Can i claim on my home insurance for property lost on holiday.

I had a camcorder and digital camera stolen out of my luggage whilst at Palma airport but my travel insurance company will not pay out because they say valuables should be in hand luggage.

These items were almost brand new and cost short of £600 (more than the holiday itself).

You can make a claim... but it's unknown its covered. First issue I see is if the loss occured in the area covered by the policy.

Also, you did not loose the items... they were stolen. Big difference when it comes to coverage.

The travel company needs to send you a written denial. If they don't/won't, it's still a valid claim.

Have you also filed this claim with your homeowners or renters ins. company?

I haven't logged this with my home insurers yet because I was all geared up for the travel insurance people to pay out.
Without checking my policy is this something that I can claim on my home insurance or will they not cover me because I had stolen on holiday?

You clearly are not in the USA so things could read differently...in this country there are limits on theft of personal property, ie 200 bucks or so for cash, maybe 1k for jewelery etc...all policys i've ever seen though say you must PROMPTLY report all losses so I think you need to get this ball rolling...you homeowners carrier will likely either attempt subro from your travel ins or they will need a written denial from them...at any rate you need to get this claim filed.

I'd echo what tcope has said if the travel insurance company hasn't given the denial in written, its still a valid claim. The general travel insurance covers loss/theft of items and luggage, not sure why they are denying it. Anyway, the homeowners' policy may cover the items if these are listed in the policy.

Homeowner's policy may cover personal belongings regardless of where it is if listed in the policy. You better check with the policy document. Hope you would get the coverage under the HO plan. Best of luck!!
