Doesn't the premium increase have something to do with the amount of the claim? I was told this when I had to file a claim last year. I also believe they told me it would stay at that increase for three years. Anyway glad to hear everything is worked out for you Amber...enjoy your New Year.

Well, the rate may get affect by the worth of the claim, but its certainly not obvious. Different insurers practice different business policies and hence, a single incident may get interpreted differently by different insurer. However, you are likely to experience rate hike if you file too many claims under the home insurance policy within a very short period of time.

wow, how sad, I am glad that all worked out for you, I hope they don't raise your premium, it is not like something like this would be your fault and besides that is what you carry insurance for.

I would think they would have to look at claims filed with other carriers to determine if they were going to raise your premium, if you have filed a lot of claims in the past they may, but if you did not, I don't see how they could justify it. goodluck hope all works out for you.

I'm sure that the insurance company's voice goes unheard in this kinda discussion. We certainly carry insurance to cover the unexpected events, but if your goods have got stolen because of carelessness on your part, then you can't blame it to the insurance company as well. They will pay for the losses alright, but should also increase the rate since they have suffered the loss towards paying for the claims.

It's you duty to secure your home so that the burglars can't break into it easily. And that is why you also receive premium rate discounts from the insurers for installing safety devices in your homes.

It would have been great to get it checked with the other carriers and then only take decisions regarding premium hikes.

But do such things really happen in this industry?

Do the carriers look at a policy holder's claims history with them or do they really count upon his entire claims history over a period?

I would think if they are going to evaluate the risk of insuring someone they may look at a claim history, this would be a smart move, kind of a background check on them to see if they have a habit of filing claims.

I know people who file several auto claims a year, it is ridiculous, if they hit something, they beat the car with a deer hide and call it deer damage. They get paid by the insurance company, I know one person who does this like once a year, she honestly wrecks once a year and then will beat the car with the hide. I have no clue why the insurance company that she has still insures her. (This person is a relative of mine). She might not mean to wreck, but I guess here in pa there is no deductible if it is deer damage. I can not believe they keep paying.

By evaluating the insurance risks it saves us all later. I also know many people who file claim upon claim and somewhere along the lines it has to affect the honest insurance paying people. Before I have ever filed a claim I looked into whether it was a better move on my behalf to even file to begin with.. (gn..doing this on my desk top...was the modem!!)

Glad to hear that you got it working there fireyone, I bet you are relieved.

I agree that people should decide wether they should file the claim or not, it should not be automatic, I know I weigh it out and see if it is worth filing or if it is something that I can handle on my own.

..also check to see if a claim this early could cause a non-renewal.

Don't you believe its unethical?
All that we're paying our premiums are to get our unforeseen risks covered. If the risks are unknown their occurrences can't really be pre-defined as per the terms of the carrier...what do you all think!
