Schools

Anyone who has kids in school must know about the fundraisers they have. My beef with them is the ones that they have that singles out low income families who cannot buy all the things they are selling. That makes some kids unhappy in school. I say the only things they should be selling at school are things everyone can afford. Our school has loads of them .Only one I partake in .It is a family fun night thing, The others I just tell them NO! The problem is ,I should not have to live in misery having to deny my kids getting to do some of the extra activities they sponsor for a price. Like succor or archery.Music even cost . I say enough is enough. Only have things in school that everyone can partake in regardless of their income.

And what happened to all the gamblin' money? In my state when they let all the river boats in all this ga-zillion dollars was to go to the schools...so you'd think they be swimmin' in money...I just don't get it...they try a bad blackmail route around my town every couple of years, you know, ''poor little johnny is going to have to go back to using candles, and chalk to do school work if you don't pass this tax hike, and no football either''...really gets me pissed.

I know there are fees that go on in college, and I never understood why you had to pay for what you did not use, activity fees and etc. But I think it grade school and high school the tax money should be used for that.

Pa residents are supposed to get back some tax money this summer sometime for the gambling revenue, we shall see. Depends on your school district, if they elected to take the new gambling money or not on how much you will get back. I have not seen a public list of the districts that chose to take it. It would be nice, my one tax is over $1100 a year, another is right around $350 and then there is the little piddly ones that add up to a few hundred bucks.

They were talking about eliminating the property tax all together and raising the sales taxes, sounds good to me, people have a choice to shop for what they want and I think the higher sales tax, I think it would go to 7% could impact thier choice, but it may also cut spending. I don't know, I do know it would be nice if they would not raise the property taxes again, I would be happy with that. I know people that have lost their homes or property for tax sale. It is like you never get done paying for your home.

How old is your daughter? You know they only have to be 13 to join the forum right? I am pretty sure, you should check it and tell her to get on the forums and write. Does she have her computer? or could she get on when your not on and write her own stuff on here? Just a thought.

I can not believe that this is happening in school districts in this day and age, I feel like I can not identify with this at all. What happens to all the federal funding and the tax money they get, you guys do pay taxes that go to your school districts right?

Our kids here in Pennsylvania don't have to buy room supplies or pay for belonging to a club. They do the ridiculous fundraising but that is always for the extras. Hell, I remember home economics, the teacher would go shopping and buy everything we needed to prepare a meal. Complete meal with desert. Now, we did have to go out and buy a pattern and the material if we wanted to do a sewing project, They even supplied the wood in woodshop for the bird houses that we built.

Anyone point being, I just don't get this at all. I asked people who have kids in school right now and their biggest complaint is paying for school pictures and year books. So it is all the same as when I was in school. I don't see how this happens. Maybe we are all taxed differently.

Yeah, clearly all states even citys have different ways of funding, some better some worse...clearly many of us are in the 'worse' category....

you can just give the school a donation of whatever you can afford and they will take it, you don't have to buy anything

I think fund raisers are aimed more toward people who do not have kids although we all know that parents were the ones that have to buy all the junk

Welcome LMAbernathy, hope you are enjoying the forum.

Goodnatured, sounds like your state has it together when it comes to education and doing very well with the No Child Left Behind act. Unfortunately, not all states or schools are like what you have experienced. There are schools in the south that are teaching in poverty, still today they lack all the supplies needed to teach the students. I seen a special one time on A&E, I think it was on southern Louisiana, the principal was on there talking, I could not believe the conditions of the schools, search A&E for school specials, it was a special report, it will show you what the kids there are enduring while trying to get a basic education, it is not up to standard and it is a shame for this day and age.

I will go on A & E and look that up, love that network, has some good crime shows dealing with real people in real situations. I really like the new show intervention.

Most of their shows are about the realness in life. It is a good network. One of my favorite networks.

Went on the A&E webpage, could not locate the documentaries anywhere. If you run across it, please post the link or pm it to me please. I would really like to see it.

Well, My daughter would not be caught dead talking to us old foggies....lol Thats what she would say. She is 16. Yes, we pay school taxes on every utility there is. Ity goes up also on every bill that goes up the higher yor electric bill the higher the school taxes. When I went to school in home ec. we had to buy also a pattern and material for the sewing project but the meal was bought by the teacher. BUT, today ,last year my daughter had to pay money for a cooking project in Life Skills class(home ec).Don't you guys have to buy pencils and paper even?
