I've put it off long enough, and I simply have to start looking at obtaining my continuing education hours. I have looked at a lot of the online CE classes, but it seems that most of them require an examination at a Thompson Prometric Testing Center. If I'm going to have to take the time to do 4-5 exams to get enough CE units, then shouldn't I just go to a class? If I go to a class, do I have to take the same types of examinations?
I'm in the state of SC. I have done my ethics requirement, and just have the (I believe) 18-24 hours or so. I have not completely left it to the end, in fact I still have about a year until the deadline. |

Hi Chris,
Have you looked at www.ceu.com? -
I use them every year to fulfill my continuing education requirements.
Much cheaper and easier than spending time in a classroom and you can complete the exams anytime you want.
They offer free exam retakes and report the credits for you.

| Do the exams still have to be completed in a proctored setting? My problem is finding time to drive 45 miles to the closest Thompson Prometric testing center and spend an hour or two taking an exam! If I had to do 3 or 4 exams, this could be a major undertaking! Wouldn't it just be easier to take the licensing exam over again? |

Hey Chris, I feel your pain. I had to complete my 24 hours and as normal, I waited until the last minute.
SC regulation ( have fun with this) chapter 69-50, section III/7:

It looks like you can have your exam proctored at "any appropriate site," but it sounds like the education provider has chosen to have there examinations at (Prometric) "approved national testing organizations." In Oregon, procoring is a piece of cake. It's actually almost non-existent for online study! Next, from SC Reg 69-50 S. III/16:

Self-study hours may include textbook study, video study, distance learning, intranet, internet, CD-ROM and any other electronic means of information communication. |

So, like just about every state, if you do it online, you have to pass a proctored exam. It's just that in this case, your state's rules suck.  I understand the driving thing, but look at it this way- you get out of the office and you won't have to take an exam! 
By the way- do the CE, and don't even think about taking the licensing exam over again. The Prometric test has gotten to be kind of a bear over the last year or so. Trust me, I know. We do this for a living. Do the CE.

| Wow. Exams for CE? Just another reason living in Ohio is actually better than most people think. I'm a CIC and had to take some serious exams to the the designation but now I just take a class each year and have twice the CE that Ohio requires. It's pricey but I think I do learn more by not having to stress about passing an exam. |

If I go take the licensing exam over again before my old license expires, I wonder if this would exempt me from the CE. Worst case scenario would be if I couldn't pass the exam, which I highly doubt...I got a 99 the first time...then I could use my time to complete the CE.
It's only been a couple years since the exam, this might prove to be the easiest way out. I've heard from people recently that the CE proctored exams are almost as hard as the licensing one...and that I would have to take 4 or 5 of them!! I'd rather study extra for the licensing exam than study for 4 or 5 CE exams! |
