What would this do to our profession? Would it help because everyone can get it, and the govt is paying for it? or would this end the need for agents in the health industry?

Well, the execution of the universal health care plan means the elimination of the underwriting system and prevalence of the guaranteed issue policy. This will increase the overall risk for the health insurance industry. Individual in relatively good health will therefore be required to carry the cost of insuring the individual with high risks, such as- the smokers and obese. This move will further increase the cost of private policies for the community.

The agents will face the impact in terms of reduced commission on their businesses, but we first need to see how effectively the system will run since the political will doesn't seem very strong. IMO the agents may not need to worry immediately. The short term effects won't be devastating for them.

I doubt the feasibility of such plan. If we look into the history, back in 1993 the liberal health plan was proposed by the then President, which has never see the light of day afterwards. Now, even if we consider the idea that universal healthcare plan will eventually eliminate the agents from the health insurance industry, it'll take several years to become a reality. And by that time we'll get plenty of opportunity to sell enough plans to retire in peace.

IMO the universal health care plan has more cons than pros. I don't see the reason in mandating health care for all. The guaranteed issue clause of the group health insurance already ensures that one can't be denied of health coverage based on his/her health condition. Therefore, the idea of universal health care is superficial, when the poor can avail low cost health care from the non-profit organizations and government agencies.

The universal health care will simply increase the burden on the tax payers as they will be required to carry the cost of popularity propaganda.

The goods and bads that will come with the universal health care plans are still very vague. There is two distinct schools defending and attacking the proposition for universal health care plan.

The idea of universal health care would definitely bring relief to people who can't afford the expensive health care services or are dropping out of the health insurance policies because of the rising premium rate. The universal plan would cover those 40 million staying out of the health coverage.

The single payment system would cut the cost of overall health coverage since it'd be done form a single pool. We often pay more individually towards medical services then we realize. A centralize system would regulate the cost and would reduce the per capital expense towards health coverage.

Personally I am against it,I don't understand why the government's answer to all of out problems is to spend more money we do not have. But then again I don't agree with a lot of the stuff they are doing.

Well, that may not be the sole motive of the state. Amongst the industrialized nations, USA is the only one with no centralized health care plan for its citizens. In all the other states, including Canada, the healthcare system is centrally regulated and ensures health protection to all.

The concept may not breed all evil. We have to ensure that it doesn't suffer from the inefficiency syndrome of the government departments, otherwise, it'll not fetch the desired results.

The health insurance costs have gone-up so much that in the coming days we may not find a single individual covered for the medical purposes.

That is a typical answer to this question, Health care cost go up with the times like everything else, the doctors have to spend money on all the new technology they use. But like most people in our country they want everything but don't want to pay for it.

It's not always the government's job to bail people out. Some extra ordinary situations maybe an exception, the disabled, or elderly that can not work need help, other than that I think people should be able to take care of themselves.
