Well, I don't have the exact count, but I guess there are good number of big players in the Indian insurance market. Right now I can recall the name of LIC or the Life Insurance Corporation of India Ltd.

I think LIC is one of the oldest in the country with the largest consumer base. Initially the market was highly govt. regulated, but recently there is a change in the trend. And at present few of the America's prominent insurance companies are operating in that county as well. I'm aware of Max NewYork Life. There can be others too.

You can try to look for other companies not on the list. Just Google it and you can find a good reference.
