Well..in my opinion life insurance swab test is just a routine check-up to find whether they are in a position to cover you!

It could get them a lot of other information regarding the condition of your mouth & teeth...especially when we know how the medical bills are often mounting upon critical diseases amounting to death!

Its just a way to be sure..

Thanks, Fatman

Medical underwriting plays an important role in life insurance policies. Hence, the insurer may ask you to do blood test and other physical check-ups. The life insurance swab test (testing of mouth swab) falls into this category. It is done to check whether you have a habit of smoking or drugs.

Smoking affects the insurance premium to a large extent. The smokers are required to pay more premium than the average rate even for the same age base.

Well, normally, they checks for the smoking habits, since its an important determinant of your life insurance premium.

However, the result derived from the mouth swab can't often be trusted, as the specimen may get corrupted very soon. In that case I agree with fatman, life insurance swab test can only be a routine check-up.

Also, if you have quit smoking long ago, then the swab test may not yield the right result, because the damaged cells might have got replaced by new cells by now.

IMO you may not have to worry a lot regarding the outcome of the swab test. It is a part of the insurance companies underwriting process.

Oral swabs are now commonly used for testing for HIV infection...plus a host of other issues. They are now routinely taken, and are much less painful that blood draws...

I have just recently asked the carrier that I work for about this very question. They told me that smoking and drugs is detected from the Urin sample only because swabs and blood tests do not show drugs or nicotine from smoking. Nicotine supposedly stays in your urin for up to 4 weeks then is no longer detected. This is where the importance of a life insurance swab test lies. Drugs, depending on which ones, stays in your urin longer.

Although the primary purpose of a saliva test is to detect the presence of HIV, a side benefit is that the presence of nicotine may also be tested. Unlike one of the old posts in this thread, insurance companies do not do DNA testing with a saliva test -- its still too expensive, and it doesn't really say anything about the insurability of the individual -- especially if they do not currently have an impairment for anything that might show up in a DNA test result.

I realize this message is more than 2 years old but wanted to caution anyone else who reads it.

In the last few years, I have investigated several companies whose agents conducted swab tests at the point of sale. Although the laws/insurance codes broken by the agents had absolutely nothing to do with the swab tests, the companies were sued for not being honest with their policy owners.

Does dipping show up in the swab test? Or is it for smokers only?

By "dipping" I assume you mean the use of chewing tobacco. Tobacco contains nicotine and nicotine will be present in your saliva if you smoke cigarettes, chew tobacco, or even if you use the nicotine gum.

Questions on a life insurance application commonly include: "Do you use tobacco or products containing nicotine?" and if you do, your answer needs to be "Yes."

Do insurance companies use the saliva test -- which is intended to identify HIV-positive status -- to identify tobacco users, drug users, or persons with specific genetic traits? They may. State laws govern what they can and cannot do with any information they obtain. Tobacco use is fair game, genetic information is not under most circumstances.

An insurance company just misrepresented themselves to me saying the swab test was to detect tobacco, When I asked to see the paperwork I found out it was testing for hiv, drugs and all manor of ilness and disease. I sent them packing and called the Florida Insurance Commissioners office. Unfortunately I had already allowed my mentally challenged daughter to do the test before seeing the consent form which was another misrepresentation. Beware!
