where can i find out if i have life insurance proceeds due to me. my exhusband died in 2007, a creditor just contacted me, i cant find a death decree on public sites anymore, they all want to charge for the info, plus i wonder if he still had my name on the life ins, i contacted the probate court, they gave me the name of the attorney, but havent heard back, is there a site somewhere where this info could be posted?

Okay, to know about the policy you might either have to contact the insurance company or the agent. Since you two were divorced, what is your reason to believe that he would have maintained policy on your name? Was it mentioned in the divorce decree? Were you receiving child support? Are you still eligible to receive child support from him?

If you know the name of the insurance company, then you certainly should begin your search there. Do you know his immediate family? They might be able to help you in locating the policy. Also, they might tell you whether any policy was paid out or not.

Is this creditor contacting you for a debt of your deceased husband? Is it the original credit or a collection agency? If its a credit card debt and belongs to your ex-husband then you simply have to tell the creditor that you're not responsible for the debt.

Do you have the name of the insurance company your husband had a policy with? If yes, you could simply contact them and ask them if you are listed as primary beneficiary. They can give you a simple 'yes' or a 'no' for an answer. If it is yes, you will be receiving the proceeds of the policy. To be able to make a claim you must find out if the policy had been in force when your ex husband died.

The insurance company will let you know the information once you also have been added as beneficiary to your husbands insurance. But also ask the family of your hubby if they know about this too so that they may help you. But it is really best if you hold the policy document. Wish you best about this one.

It would be much difficult to locate a plan if its been paid-up. You'll not be able to trace the premium payment record of the plan. However, I also doubt that you have anything due on a plan, otherwise the insurer would have contacted you by now.

Sil, an insurer might not divulge the information regarding beneficiary status readily to everyone. OP, you can check with the unclaimed property office for any unclaimed life insurance policy. Following is the link to their site.

Hello Jeremy,

I just wanted to mention that the insurer would not contact the beneficiary until the insured person on the policy reaches the mortality table of 100. How does the insurance company know that the insured passed away unless someone tells them? So if the op does not know the company name of the life insurance they are out of luck. Also, the insurance company does not have any obligation to escheat the proceeds to the government until the insured person on the policy turns 100. And to add insult to injury the policy must still be active. So looking at the unclaimed site that you mentioned would not work. I just wanted to clear this misconception up because so many people think that this is the way to go. It is best to claim your life insurance proceeds as quickly as possible or it can be lost for a very long time if not found. You have to register on a central database so your beneficiaries can find it.

Try to contact his insurance agent or insurance company..I am not sure but you can give it a try to go to police and take legal help if the firm does not allow to give you his insurance details. I wonder why they are not giving you these details

But Jeremy can they not simply tell OP if the OP is listed as beneficiary? I believe the insurance company can do that. They may not divulge any more information than that. Maybe a simple ‘yes’ or a ‘no’ can be done. I guess the OP can at least find out if her name exists on the beneficiary's list from the company if she has the name i.e.
