life insurance rejection appeal form letter?

by aaron3313 » Fri Jan 09, 2009 07:23 pm

i need to write an appeal letter because i applied for more life insurance through my company and i was rejected due to 'medical information given on my application.' do life insurance companies reject everyone who takes anti-depressants? if so, there is a huge amount of our population who must not have life insurance. i do not believe it is good practice to deny someone who is responsibly managing their medical needs. can anyone help with a form letter? i have 60 days to appeal.

sorry for my absence after posting this. i was whisked away on a business trip. thanks to everyone who replied. it is a group life policy through my company. the medication is effexor and the 'diagnosis' was anxiety with depression. i left a message with my Dr asking her to write a letter with an explanation of my diagnosis. the LI company says that will accept that or a copy of medical records. we'll see what happens.

It all really depends on the particular insurance company and their established underwriting guidelines. You are correct, there is a huge amount of our population who cannot qualify for life insurance for several different reasons.

You make the comment that you don't think it is "good practice" to deny someone who is "responsibly managing their medical needs". Would this not also apply to AIDS or cancer patients? Life insurance companies just have to draw the line somewhere.

Evidently there was no medical/paramedic exam completed during your insurance application process. Is that correct?

The life insurance company is obligated to give you the exact medical reason for your being declined.

The insurance companies with whom I work look at "anxiety" and "depression" very carefully, but there are cases when the policy can be issued at a standard or rated premium.

Maybe with your doctor's letter, the company will see your situation in a different light.

Good luck!

Why so? is it because that people in depression tend to be suicidal? But as far I am aware that life insurance companies do cover death by suicides, or I know it wrong?

I don't know what you are paying through your group or what the coverage amount is, but you should take into consideration what happens if you leave the company or were to be laid off. If the policy is through a group, the usual option is to convert it to a whole life policy (a very expensive one at that) or drop the coverage. Depending on your other health factors, you might be able to get cheaper or comparable coverage on your own and have it locked in for however long you wish. What state are you in?

Most policys will have a claus that allows them to not pay for a death by suicide for say the first two years of the policy...my state has no time limit rather it has to be proven the policy was purchased with the INTENT of commiting suicide...so suicide is paid all the time, it just depends if the time limit has elapsed or if it was purchased with the sole intent of commiting suicide, and then the ins company has to PROVE that intent.
