Claim: 20k
Deductible: 5k
Insurance company's payout to me: 15k
Questions:
1. If I do the work myself, and get the work done for, say 10k, will the insurance company ask for 5k back at the end of the 1year when the claim is closed?
2. Can I add upgrades to the house using the 5k?
3. Are there any tax implications if I take up the work myself, like having to pay taxes on the 15k, etc because this would have now been income (if I had used a contractor)?
Thanks,

If they paid you the full amount of your claim minus your deductible, you are free to do what you want with the money. _________________ Can I say I’m working if I stare blankly at my computer all day? |

| I've heard that sometimes the carrier would only pay you when you could show them that you're dealing with a professional contractor. On the other hand, if they're willing to pay you regardless of who did the repairs, then there shouldn't be any problem. Consult with your agent and go through your policy papers to be sure of the payment procedures. |

Are there any issues if I don't do some of the items marked in the insurance adjuster's estimate? For eg, the adjuster has included replacing the interior door unit. Instead, I think it just has about 1-2 mm of water related swelling in some places. If I just do some light weight sand-papering and re-painting, I think it should be sufficient.

| If you have already settled with them, you can do as you please with the money. There is no stipulation that you even have to get it repaired. |

Again, If your claim is 20K and your deductible is 5K and they paid you 15K then you can do what you want with the money. If there is any holdback that is recoverable by you, then you will need to complete the work. _________________ Can I say I’m working if I stare blankly at my computer all day? |

Thanks for all your inputs.
Actually, they have paid me 14k, and kept the 1k as depreciation. Most of the depreciation is towards paint work - walls, cabinets, doors, etc. I have to do all of that anyways.
But I don't think it is necessary to replace, for example, the interior door unit. It seems to me that I could just sandpaper the slight swelling (1-2mm) and just repaint the required sections of the door unit.
Is this likely to cause any issues? _________________ Register Now to have your Insurance queries solved. |

Nah. As long as the repairs are made there shouldn't be a problem. Contractors are able to "cut corners" or find other ways to repair that reduce the cost. In those cases, they pocket the money...in this case you do. For a couple odds and ends, it shouldn't be a problem... as your adjuster, I just wouldn't want to know about it. Depending on what you have to give them for the hold back amount, you might have to be a little creative in what you send to them since you are doing the work yourself.
Side note: I don't understand why they wasted their time holding 1K on a 20K claim. _________________ Can I say I’m working if I stare blankly at my computer all day? |

what you don't want to do is just not do anything. If you don't, and a claim occurs later for the affected area, if they can say that the previous repairs were not carried out, then they won't pay for them again as they were'n a consequence of the new claim. _________________ Low Rate Insurance
