Replacement roof claim

We have recently been approved and have received our check to have our roof replaced due to hail and wind damage a few months back. My father and husband and a few other family members want to do the roof themselves. So we received the first part of the money and that will be just over what it will cost to replace our roof and comb the air conditon fins adn some garage drywall that was all damaged in this storm.
1) do we have to send the money left over back to the insurace comany? 2) we won't need the depreciation check that comes later, as we will be under, so then what do we do?
3) we live in AZ, do we have to use a licensed contractor?
Thank you for your time

No, I don't think that you need to send the check to them. But you must remember to get it done in a proper way. If you don't do it, then your next roofing claim may get rejected. These days all insurance carriers have the right means to differentiate between new and old damages.
