My father had hail damage on his house. A door to door roofing salesman came to see him and told him he was from Colorado and gave him his business card which did not have an address. He gave dad an estimate of $5800 and then dad had his insurance adjustor come out and do an estimate. His insurance company cut him a check for $2700 which dad has not given to the roofing company yet. I was concerned because I am his caregiver and he has dementia. I checked out the company with the Better Business Bureau and they are not located in Colorado but rather Minnesota and have an "F" rating. They also had a complaint from a customer that they took $3500 and never came back to do any work and never responded to customer's request for return of the funds. I also found out later that dad signed a contract and didn't know what he was signing. He said he thought he was signing an estimate. He is 83 years old and has had dementia for years, however, still lives in his home. The family would like him to get a local roofing company that has good referrals instead of taking a chance on a company that may be unscrupulous. Is there a way he can get out of the contract?

I could just stop reading here and I already know what the problem is.

My recommendation is to simply not have the scam company do any work. If they have not done the work, I doubt they are going to do anything about it. If they complain I'd tell them that your father is not capable of understanding what he signed, that it appears from your research that the roofing "company" is one of those that go door to door after storms and scams people and that you are looking into reporting them to your states Attorney General as such a company. I _highly_ doubt they are going to do anything but leave. I have no doubt that they will use more pressure to get the job but this is what they do best. They scam people.

I'd also recommend that you _do_ report them to the AG and Dept of Insurance. You need to help stop them from scamming the next person.

I see you have a clear case of forgery going in your favor and you have nothing to worry about here since your father is suffering from dementia. You have something else to do apart from complaining against the entity. Just give them a call and tell them to stay away apart along with their scamming activities.
