insurance company acted in bad faith

I had a break and enter the night before I moved, and the insurance company acted in bad faith My claim was delayed for 6 month and was never worked on unless I called or left messages. My husband was restarting a car restoration business and couldn't do much because many of his tools were stolen. We lost thousands in lost revenue and were told we had to sub mit our receipts to get 100 percent coverage by April 1st. The B and E happened in October of last year. They didn't issue the check until way past the deadline to submit receipts because they delayed it so long. They agreed to extend the date by a few days, which still was not enough since it had to clear our bank. They even outsourced it to cause further delayed. and if I wasn't on their case, my claim would still go ontouched. I already lost a lot because I had a lot of very expensive jewellery, but figured I would get all the appraisals when I called to give them a change of address. None of us think that this will ever happen to us, but we lost over 60,000 in jewellery alone, and with this delay, we've lost even more because we can't possibly buy everything with an only 80 percent payout, let alone the revenue lost because my husband couldn't do anything without his tools. I have tons of emails asking them why this is taking so long. I was even honest enough to call them if I happen to find something that I claimed as stolen, was found. This happened the night before I moved, so after unpacking, I called them to let them know that I found a few things and their response to me is that is what took so long because I called them to tell them to take a few items out. I figured after 5 months they were working on my claim, only to find out they were going to outsource it, which made no sense to me because it wasn't that complicated. Then the outsourcing company took their sweet time, and I believe they purposely did this to delay the claim and payout as little as possible and not giving us an extension to purchase our things because they've paid the outsourcing company. They didn't even give us a proper value for the items that were taken, and unless we buy it used, we can't even buy anything new with the allowable amount. Do I have any chance in recovering this and how do I go about doing this. I live in Edmonton Alberta...thank you all :)

First of all, I’m very sorry to hear about your loss. Second, in these forums we deal with insurance queries surrounding the US and not Canada. Still, let me try to help you out in the best possible way.

Did you have a chat with your agent so that you could know why they were delaying the claim?

My husband was restarting a car restoration business and couldn't do much because many of his tools were stolen. We lost thousands in lost revenue and were told we had to submit our receipts to get 100 percent coverage by April 1st.

Did the clauses in the home insurance policy include compensation for lost revenue? What kind of receipts?

I figured after 5 months they were working on my claim, only to find out they were going to outsource it, which made no sense to me because it wasn't that complicated.

Insurance claims are generally outsourced keeping in mind the issue of customer satisfaction. Claims are outsourced so that they can be processed quickly and efficiently. If the outsourcing company purposely delayed the processing, you can complaint that to the insurance company.

They didn't even give us a proper value for the items that were taken, and unless we buy it used, we can't even buy anything new with the allowable amount. Do I have any chance in recovering this and how do I go about doing this.

Again, talk to your insurance agent to find out a solution to this. Otherwise, file a complaint with the insurance regulator in your state. Lastly, talk to your attorney and initiate a legal proceeding to get your claims approved and dispensed.
