My Employer Died & His Wife is Selling the Business

My employer sadly passed away last week. His wife will be selling the business to a new owner and I am questioning my job security. She wants the new doctor to keep the staff on but of course once she leaves there are no guarantees! Wondering if I can collect unemployment if I choose not to continue with the new company? It will be a new company name -- I think this has something to do with qualifying for benefits as well.

If there are no major changes to your job (duties, pay, etc.) and you are offered a job and you do not accept it you will not qualify for benefits.

Despite any name change, if the conduct of the business is essentially the same after a change of ownership, existing employees are covered under the unemployment insurance account that previously attached to the business, and which also attaches to the new owner.

But it would be best if you did not terminate voluntarily. Let the ownership change and let them terminate you, if that's what they want to do. Or find new employment between now and then, and make the change seamlessly so it's not an issue.
