Most states have website, usually under the Dept of Insurance, that list a general outline of what an insurance company should be doing. Other then that, if the insurance company does not honor the stipulations in the contract, it could be acting in Bad Faith.

The policy holder may expect clear dealings and have considerable trust upon his carrier. However, if he's not satisfied with the services of the company, he'd be able to file a legal suit against his carrier.

The bad faith claim occurs when the insurance company deals wrongfully with a claim, or lengthen the claim process unnecessarily. The insured may report such issues to the state insurance department.
