The value of the funds and the shares are volatile and depends entirely on the market situation, hence, very difficult to guess. However, as it's believed by many investors that the risks associated with the funds are less than the risks with the shares.

Hmmm.....Mutual funds are the safer alternative of investments in shares. Shares are normally for the aggressive and savvy market players, who know all the ins-n-outs of the market, while a moderate risk taker with limited fund to invest, can risk their money on mutual funds.
Mutual fund operates on the risk diversification basis i.e. minimises the risk of losing the entire investment on shares when the market goes down.
