VPI Plans for your pets

[ Join discussion ]

Each of your pets is special and unique. Each pet has specific needs just like human beings do. As they grow old they will need special care and that is costly. So, you must know that pet care is offered in 2 categories and pet owners can choose from 2 major pet insurance types.

  • Superior VPI Plan
  • Standard VPI Plan
Both the superior and the standard plans make provision for you to get your pet treated by any veterinary doctor and in any part of the world too.

VPI Superior Insurance Plan

This plan covers costs for your pet's
  • Annual check ups
  • Vets visits
  • Tests from diagnostics centers
  • Laboratory tests
  • Medication through prescriptions
  • X-rays
These are only a few of the things covered. Pet insurance is meant to cover any cost for treatment for your pet. It may not include regular visits to the vet for check up.

How does the VPI Superior Insurance Plan work?

The benefit schedule that VPI uses is filed with the Department of Insurance (DOI). This helps you keep a track of the amount of reimbursement that is available for your pet's treatments. You may visit a licensed veterinary doctor, get your pet treated, pay for the treatment and put the claim on the insurance company. You may avail benefits from VPI Superior Insurance anywhere in the world. The additional coverage may allow you more scope to treat your pets:
  • You may add Pet WellCare Protection to your pet's insurance policy. It allows you to receive instant routine care benefits.

  • VPI Superior Plans also provide enhanced cancer coverage for your pet. Conditions like skin cancer, breast cancer, leukemia and bone cancer are also covered. There is also a cancer rider that you may opt for. This increases the reimbursable benefits of the policy.

VPI Standard Insurance Plan

This plan covers the basic costs for pet (dogs and cats) care. Even though you are supposed to pay a larger sum of money for every time that you can make a claim on your pet insurance, the monthly expenditure is a little less than the superior plan. Like the VPI Superior Plan, the VPI Standard Plan also has provisions for adding Pet WellCare Protection and Enhanced Cancer Coverage and provides the same benefits.

Pet owners may opt for either of the 2 plans depending on the kind of need they and their pets have. It is undoubtedly very painful to see your pet in ill health. So, opting for pet insurance would be a sensible thing to do.

I've had my cat for four years now, and I just now started thinking about getting pet insurance for her. I don't know much about pet insurance, so I was hoping to find some help here. I do have a few questions:

1. What pet insurance company would you recommend?
2. Why or what makes them a good company?

Thanks in advance.

Well, there are several agencies out there to offer coverage to your pet. However, the best way is to ask your veterinarian. He can guide you in selecting the carrier.

However, while shopping for the insurance you can keep the following things in mind,

  • What are covered and what are excluded in the policy?

  • Whether your vet accepts the policy you wish to apply for or not?

  • What co-pay or deductible applies to the policy?

Like with any other insurance company we want to have a good experience with the pet insurance company as well. Hence, you need to find out how their customer service is like. If you are not satisfied with the first few calls made to the insurer's office, it'd be wise to look elsewhere.

The customer service, claim payment history and the benefits offered by the insurer distinguish between a good and a bad company.

Though Jeremy has already compiled the important shopping tips, I'd still like to add my two penny.

Some pet insurance companies don't include the conditions excluded in their plan in the policy document. Hence, ask specifically to the agent about the diseases excluded under the plan.

Some insurance company may restrict your visits only to the veterinarians included in their network or may not cover the expenses which you may incur while visiting a doctor outside the network.

With the continuous research and developments many sophisticated and expensive medicines are available in the market. hence, you're required to check whether your insurer covers those drugs or not. and if they do, what is the annual car applied to the policy?

Also you should find out whether or not the insurer supports the after-hours emergency services and specialists' treatments.

Hope the inputs help.

Here are few companies that offer pet insurance in USA

  • ASPCA Pet Health Insurance
  • PetCare
  • Hartville Pet Insurance
  • Pets Health Plan
  • Veterinary Pet Insurance

There are few others as well. However, you should check whether the company is licensed to do business in your state or not, otherwise you may face problem processing the claims.
