I recieved a quote from one mechanic and the price was too high. I took my car to another mechanic to see what his price would be. He called me back a couple of weeks later after he fixed my car and qouted me a price

Did you sign a work order giving him authorization to preform the repair?

Ditto to what Trench is asking. In some/many states a shop cannot charge or charge more then a preset limit without a written contract.

Huh? Are you saying that he had your car for a couple of weeks with no communication then called out of the blue and said "your car's fixed, here's my quote."?

How many weeks were you planning to wait before you called him to find out what was going on?

Oh, and does this have anything to do with insurance?

That's my same 'concern', as well. Why would you just wait. Did you just drop your car off and leave? How did the garage know what you needed done, if you din't tell him in the first place? I don't think (legally) they (mechanics) can just work on your car and NOT tell you what they are doing. Also...it WOULD be your responsibility to find out BEFORE any work was done on it.

It may depend on what state you're in as far as the law goes, but I would never leave my car with a mechanic without a written estimate and a phone call before any work is started.

(My opionion, of course)..i would think if you took this to court, it may be a 'lose, lose' situation: NO.....the garage did not give you an estimate and you didn't give them permission. NO...you didn't ask for an estimate. Did you sign anything with the garage/mechanic?
