Our 21 year old son has been canceled from his insurance company. He has had one accident and one ticket. He is insured through the insurance company that my husband and I have had for 20 plus years. Is there anything we can do so that he does not get stuck paying for high risk insurance?

If you want to get a car insurance as a high-risk driver follow the steps below:

1. Check with Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for your driving record.

2. Pay your fines for all pending violations and then clear your history of violating laws from DMV.

3. Contact your DMV and get information on improving driving skills and get out of high-risk category.

4. Get a low value vehicle. This will lower your premium.

5. Contact agents of renowned companies and ask them what kind of coverage you need.

6. Take lesson in safety driving. This may lower your premiums.

7. Get a vehicle with automatic seat-belts and airbags. This could help you get a discount on a high-risk driver's insurance premium.

8. Finally, choose an insurance company which provides most coverage for a high-risk driver at comparatively lower premium. You need to do some research before you could choose a company or a policy. Also go through the terms and conditions of the policy carefully before making the final choice.

Hi jms_stargazer

High risk drivers may not remain high risk throughout their lives. You could ask your son to enroll into driving classes. If he owns a car then ask him to install safety devices (if they are not installed still i.e.). I am assuming at 21 he could be a student. If so, then getting good grades will also add to the risk reduction factor, but for starters get him enrolled into driving classes. Insurance companies often offer lower rates to individuals who take an initiative to correct mistakes.
