total loss : my insurance company sent me a check that would not even cover the repair of one item let alone repairing all the damage to my car. the damage is all cosmetic vandalism . I did not receive any documentation supporting the settlement offer.

First, this is why it was a total loss... the value of the vehicle was far less then the repairs. So the check is not going to address the damages.

You need to call your adjuster and ask them to provide documentation on how they arrived at the value they paid. Also ask them to send you a break down of the payment. Review the information to see if its correct.

Hi, I'm wondering about the check payment! I haven't heard of such payments before a settlement has been achieved. Even the adjuster's intentions are not quite clear from the OP's post.

Well, this is something that you really need to go through very carefully. It's not always the same way that you and your carrier arrive at values. So, you'd certainly need to know the way they've arrived at this value.
