Can I become a insurance adjuster if I have a felony?

All licenses in the insurance industry are issued under the authority of the state, however, the federal Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act (18 USC 1033, 1034) specifies that persons who have committed certain felonies are prohibited from being involved without a consent waiver from the state regulator. If your felony specifically involved a money or property crime, among others, you will need the waiver. There is no statute of limitations on when the crime/conviction occurred.

Possibly. Depends on how long ago and what the sentence was. Fine? Jail? Prison?

I was convicted of felony stealing in Missouri 4 years ago. I have been a contractor doing insurance restoration work but would prefer to work as an adjuster rather than for restoration companies.

I didn't consider it before because I was always told that a felony made it nearly impossible to get hired as an adjuster.

I have experience in the field and at a desk, and I'm proficient at Xactimate (estimating software most all adjusters use).

Do you think an insurance company would still hire me? What about an independent adjusting firm? Is there any way I can increase my odds or make myself more appealing to a potential employer in this market?

Thanks in advance for your advise.

Apparently, you have not spent time reading all of the preceding questions and answers which are essentially the same as yours.

Your felony conviction is SQUARELY in the 10-ring of the target pinned on convicted felons by the Law Enforcement and Violent Crime Control Act, 18 U.S.C. 1033, 1034. You cannot work in the insurance industry with a felony conviction unless you are granted a "Consent Waiver" by the state insurance regulator. That's the only person who can answer your question.

Without obtaining the consent waiver, a person who is employed by any insurance company or other business directly related to insurance (such as independent public adjusters) is guilty of a federal crime which carries a sentence of up to 15 years in federal prison, a $10,000 fine, or both fine and imprisonment.

Charged with Marijuana Possession over four years ago as a dumb 18yo in college. I completed a Pre-trial diversion and the case was dismissed w/ prejudice... Will this hinder my chances of licensing at all?
And with a pre-trial diversion, would you still need to disclose to questions asking about convictions?

I was convicted with two petty larcenies a couple of years back. No jail, paid fine. Will that prevent me from obtaining my license?
