Can I become a insurance adjuster if I have a felony?

All licenses in the insurance industry are issued under the authority of the state, however, the federal Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act (18 USC 1033, 1034) specifies that persons who have committed certain felonies are prohibited from being involved without a consent waiver from the state regulator. If your felony specifically involved a money or property crime, among others, you will need the waiver. There is no statute of limitations on when the crime/conviction occurred.

It doesn't matter when you were convicted. You will have to file for a waiver from the regulator in your state, and it's up to that person to decide.

Your felony conviction could have happened 50 years ago, could have resulted from a guilty plea, or as a decision of the judge or jury, and the result is still the same: You must obtain a Consent Waiver from the insurance regulator in your state. That's the only person who knows the answer to your question.

can felony retail grand theft prevent me from obtaining a insurance adjuster license? I am 34 i had flawless record until i turned 33. I had a four month span where i had exremely hard times. I lost my vehicle which in turn lost my job and then my home. I tried holding jobs while being homeless but could not do it. When u have no shower and no vehicle it becomes virtually impossible. I have no family that could help. I did it strictly for survival. I would go up to 5 days with no food also no clothes or a place to wash them. I forgot to mention i was robbed for all my cash, power tools for work, and every bit of clothes i owned. I was in the process of moving and had vehicle filled to the brim. In total it was about 8000$. I was trapped and literally dieing on the streets. I didnt know what to do. All the homeless shelters or halfway houses for men were located extremely far from any potential jobs. I couldnt make it work. I would walk for hrs to work and be digusting on arrival to work. What would be the best avenue for me to take?

You have to apply for a waiver from the Superintendent of Insurance in New York. You will probably be denied a license based on the nature of your conviction.
