Dropping insurance after a claim

I wrecked my vehicle! Left my truck out of gear and it rolled back to hit a barrier pole,no damage to pole. My vehicle was damaged to the repair cost of 3900 quote. My insurance is a 500 deductible which they will raise my premium 400 every six months for 3 years. ARRRRR! I've been with them for almost 5 years without a claim. I'm wondering if I put a claim trough them and then drop them to transfer to a different carrier. Will that work with out repercussions to me? I feel as though the insurance company's are a scam. I've never even used my insurance in all my life.

Thanks for your time.

So you did not file a claim for this accident?

$3900 is a _lot_ of damage for a truck simply rolling backward into a pole. Sounds like the entire bed was replaced or at least, a side 1/4 panel.

While I understand insurance is expensive, its based on many factors. Some of these things people can control but they don't... and they simply complain about how high their rates area. How is your driving history? How old are you? where do you live? All of these things can greatly affect your rates (moving violations have a big affect).

You rates are not really based on what a carrier has paid... rather, what they _might_ pay or what the risk is that they are assuming. This is the best way to look at what you are paying for. There is a risk that you might cause property damage or an injury to someone. Your insurance company is assuming this risk for you... up to your policy limits. Still does not help with the high price but explains what you are paying for.

It's not a dollar for dollar exchange. If it were, everyone would simply insure themselves.

To answer your question... most likely your carrier has reported your accident to a database that all carriers use (CLUE). So other carriers can then access this information.
