Okay I am a 22 year old full time student working only part time, my father passed away recently and I am just curious about what will happen with him having a life insurance policy and as me being his only dependent. My stepmom has all his info and I just want to know what I'm talking about when I ask her about it.

Dependent status has little to do with life insurance proceeds unless the money ends up going to the decedent's estate. There, the court is bound by state probate law when it comes to distributing assets. Spouses usually get first dibs after all the creditors have been satisfied first. Adult children can successfully petition for a share, especially when in the per stirpes bloodline compared to a second/subsequent spouse -- but the newest spouse will not be left penniless unless she/he had criminal involvement in the death.
