My insurance was reinstated minutes after the accident. I dont know if the vehicle that rear ened me was insured. The person driving the car was not the owner of the vehicle and the driver was not insured. Who can I get to pay for damages to my new 2012 corolla? I also purchased gap insurance from the dealer will this help me?

You may wish to have an attorney review the gap insurance policy from the dealership to see if the gap policy would still cover any aspect of the loss. It is likely that the gap policy will be voided due to the failure to maintain collision coverage. If the gap policy is poorly drafted, you might luck out and be be able to maintain some amount of coverage from the dealer. Another recorse is to purse recovery directly from the owner and operator of the vehicle that struck you. You can contact your local bar association for reccomendations on attorneys. Where did the loss occur?

So you did not have the required insurance at the time of the accident and only chose to pay for insurance _after_ the accident happened. Okay.

The person driving the car was not the owner of the vehicle and the driver was not insured.

WHAT? The person was driving without insurance so now you are left to _try_ to collect directly from this person as they chose to drive illegally? Now don't that suck!?

Feel free to ask the drive and owner to pay for your damage. Good luck with that. Your other recourse is to file suit against them and obtain a judgement. You can then attempt to collect on that judgment. Don't it suck when people drive without having the proper insurance?

Doubt it. That is when there is not enough money to pay off the loan on a total loss vehicle. I'm guessing your car is not a total loss?

What lesson did we learn from this experience? Other then, if you can't afford the insurance on a brand new 2012 vehicle then perhaps you should not buy a 2012 vehicle.
