Yes, you may purchase auto insurance online. In order to buy a good coverage you must do the following:

1. Gather as much information as possible regarding your car and the designated driver.
2. Find the most suitable discounts for yourself.
3. Get multiple online insurance quotes.
4. Talk with the insurance provider over the phone.
5. Review your existing auto insurance policy, if any.
6. Find out consumer feedback regarding the carrier.
7. Make extensive survey of the insurance market before settling for any one.
8. Evaluate your coverage needs.

Considering that adamsarthur is not a licensed insurance agent, it is understandable that the item which should be first in any list like this is last in his. Others in his list, like #2, #4, #6, and #7, are largely a waste of time.

If you do not understand your coverage needs, applying for auto insurance unassisted online would be like trying to pick a pair of matching socks from the loose ones in a dresser drawer in the dark. You're better off working with a local agent or broker who can help you identify and meet your need.

Hi Kevin. You can certainly buy a policy online and there are numerous such providers. But before you do that, you should consult a licensed insurance agent in your state. You can also get help from many insurance agents and experts here in this community.

It's only an experienced auto insurance agent who can provide you with valid suggestion regarding what should be the basic liability, how much should you opt for, and what add on you should include.

Assuming you are in the USA: some companies, like Progressive & Hartford, give you lower rates if you buy online or direct. Some companies, like USAA, Esurance, and Amica, only sell direct, and do not have local agents.

But with many companies, there is no benefit or lower rate for buying auto insurance direct or online.

Find out the major auto insurance companies in your state, then contact local agents, including one or two independent agents, to get quotes and discuss the coverage the you need.
