Hi,
I am new to the insurance biz, and could really use some advice on getting started. I am a Respiratory Therapist (14yrs into it) so I like the good, stable income it provides for my family, so I can't give that up right now until I can realize if I can do well at this new line of work.
Should I start as an independent agent so I can do it part time? If so, who would be a good company to start with? Good training, and support would be essential.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Before commenting anything B.Lane I need to ask you few question.
1. from where you are ?
2. Do you have any knowledge on insurance?
3. What type of insurance you and your family have ?

Thanks for the reply.
I reside in Greeley, Colorado.
The knowledege I have is limited to what I have learned mainly from online studying via Kaplan Financial courses, and forums such as these.
The insurance we have is through our employer my wife and I have policies for $500,000 each and coverage for our children.
Like I stated I am new to this, but eager to learn the business.
I have no doubt that I'll be successful at this in due time. I am not afraid of working hard.

| One thing to always remember, is that insurance can make or break you. You should always remember to investigate the companies as if you were contemplating buying insurance from them. I would go with an A or A+ superior rated company if at all possible. Its great to be able to open a presentation by presenting the good qualities that your company withholds. I would start part time. We have to face it, insurance is not for everyone. I was a sales manager for a cell phone company before a came into insurance, and I worked part time as well. It's good to have a safety net in the beginning because it takes a little while to build clientele. One of the most important things to remember while you are getting started, is to keep the cost of your advertising at a minimum. I began writing lots of successful business, by bringing my business card to many small businesses around town. You never know how many of them do not provide insurance for their employees. If you are just debating on going into the business, but havent made your mind up yet, then know this. It is a HARD thing to start up. Anyone who tells you otherwise, is fibbing. However, its worth it! I was making 40,000 dollars a year when I was 18. The question you must ask yourself is, can you sell, and be honest at the same time? Honesty is number one, your dealing with peoples lives! |

Honesty is my greatest asset. I deal with peoples lives every shift I work. Literally lives hanging in the balance. I have been a Respiratory Therapist for 14 years, and have been witness to countless traumas, shattered families, lives that ended far to soon. On the positive side, working in the Neo-natal intensive care I have seen many new lives come into this world as well. Full of hope and promise. With my extensive public contact with families in their darkest hours, and in the greatest joy of a newborn, I have no doubt that I can provide to them a honest, reliable service. I will start part time, I currently bring home around $57,000 per year being an RT, so I can't walk away from that. I have a wife and 4 kids to provide for.
Where should i look to start? I see ads for NAA all the time, any thoughts on them or similar companies? |

Berry, I would like to suggest you one thing as you are entering to the insurance field for the first time, do not consider it as your main profession instantly. Give yourself some time and see how well you can adapt to this environment. till then do it as part time job.

I here ya'
I was only going to start out part time, to get my feet wet, and gain some experience.
My pressing question is though, where do I begin? What organization will provide me with part time opportunities?
Where and how did you get your start?
I have heard a lot about NAA and SIAA, the main reason I would lean towards something like is the schedule flexibility they can offer me.
Hey... if it doesn't work out I can always move on from there.
Any suggestions? |

First,welcome to our community.
Insurance, no doubt, offers an exciting career. But at the same time it is quite demanding. You need to ask yourself that- are you ready to take the challenge or not?
In my opinion, as long you are not mastering over the art of insurance selling, enjoy it as part time one. |

To join either National Agent Alliance or Strategic Independent Agents Alliance you need to have ‘Life Insurance License'. Do you have the license? If yes, then you can join any one of it. Personally, I will suggest ‘National Agent Alliance'. It is a reputed one in the market

NAA is a good place to begin. They provide training and cheap leads. I would suggest that you expand your knowledge outside of NAA as well. The train their agents to sell simplified issue term policies because they issue fast so you get paid quickly. IMO they do a disservice to their clients by not offering fully underwritten products that would save their clients money. You should also learn the benefits of permanent products because in a lot of morgtgage protection cases they are better for the client.

Hope you don't mind me throwing my two cents into the arena.
I do not know the health insurance side but do know p/c. If you want to do this parttime, while holding down a "regular" job, call around to independent agencies and ask if they are open to hiring someone in your parttime position.
Let them interview you BUT also know that YOU are interviewing them. Do not go to work for the first agency that is willing to hire you, particularly if you do not feel completely comfortable with the people you meet. There are plenty of agencies out there.
Finally, as you begin approaching family, friends and others about your new business ask if they will give you an opportunity to see if you can save them money. Nearly everyone is ok with trying to save money. Let them know that you only work with "A" rated carriers (hopefully you do).
It takes persistency in insurance. Do not give up.
