Hello anonymous1, to start selling insurance you first need to obtain license for that. After obtaining license you can start your career as an insurance agent either as an independent agent or as a captive agent.

My mother in law sold insurance and she really enjoyed it. However, going for your license is time consuming and takes lots of studying. She also said the test was on the difficult side but she did it. She hooked up with a company who helped her obtain her license. They paid for the test and the training and the traveling as she had to travel to take the test. Now she did this about 20 years or so ago. Be sure to research the various companies out there and talk to some people who are currently selling insurance. My mom in law said that some folks got their license then quit soon after because it just wasn't for them. good luck to you

In order to learn how to start selling insurance , first of all, you need to check with your State Department of Insurance to see what the requirements are in obtaining an insurance license in your state. Just Google it - "Dept Ins XX".

Next, there are different insurance licenses - life and health, property and casualty, Series 6 & 63, etc., so you probably need to decide in what areas of insurance you want to work. I just would not take on too much at first, you can always sit for other license exams later.

I will tell you that the insurance field is not a career you just want to try, because it will try you first.

It is a rewarding career, but there are many challenges as well.

If you are interested in helping people plan for the future, have good communication skills, the desire to learn, and don't take "no" personally, then it just might be the right career for you.

Good luck.

Insurance is very right...it is something that you want to invest your time and resources into for it is demanding. You will have (hopefully) many clients no matter what venue you pursue (life, health etc.) and you are always 'on call' because people have questions and to them holidays aren't off limits. you may be called at any time and you are a constant customer service center just by yourself. If you have a sales personality (as i call it) you might pick up how to start selling insurance quickly and you probably will find the work challenging and very rewarding. that's why there are various categories in insurance that you can study and take your exams on.

I would say that a very good point to start from as far as selling insurance would be to look at the company or companies that you are currently insured under. Get your licenses and everything , of course. But after that, just wait a minute and see what it is that you like about your current insurer. I am a firm believer that if you believe in a product, you can make others believe in it as well. And believe me, all insurance companies are not the same, and everyone isnt offering everything. So you have to focus on whats important to you and take it from there. Good luck to you!
Oh, and once you get your licence you will probably get tons of offers from different companies through the mail. Everyones in the realm of recruiting. So take your time and weigh all options.

For all intents and purposes, there are only 2 ways to go. Life and Health or Property and Casualty. Which ever avenue you decide to take, you might begin by finding a company that will enroll you in a training program as you study for your state insurance license. This will give you someplace to go once you pass the test. So that I don't offend anyone by mentioning company names, let me just say that there are many very reputable companies out there with which I'm certain you would find success. If, by chance you decide to take the life insurance road, stay away from Primerica and American Income Life. In my opinion, there is nothing but trouble there and I would stay as far away as humanly possible.

i like working for AIL. just as the same with any career path, if you dont have the discipline or desire to sell the products, then you wont succeed.

you can get started by obtaining a license first. then, after getting it, find yourself a job in an insurance company. simple as that, BUT first pass the license test

I only partially agree with you, Brad. The agent should be a self motivator and possess the zeal to succeed, but at the same time he should be equipped with the product knowledge and have the best interest of the client in mind. The agent should refrain himself from mis-selling and therefore should evaluate the needs of the client beforehand and should also make him understand his requirements.

Thanks,
Rupert
