you can get started by obtaining a license first. then, after getting it, find yourself a job in an insurance company. simple as that, BUT first pass the license test

I only partially agree with you, Brad. The agent should be a self motivator and possess the zeal to succeed, but at the same time he should be equipped with the product knowledge and have the best interest of the client in mind. The agent should refrain himself from mis-selling and therefore should evaluate the needs of the client beforehand and should also make him understand his requirements.

You need to be licensed as a Property & Casualty Agent and as a Life Agent in the state where you live and in the states where you want to do business. Depending on the state, you may need a prelicensing education course (for example: 52 hours in CA, 0 in Utah, 40 hours in many states). You will have to take (and pass) a subject matter exam and pass a criminal background check.
Without making any endorsements of their products and services, you might want to approach some of the larger companies such as State Farm, Farmers, Allstate, and Prudential, each of which has an entrepreneurial path to agency ownership for the right persons.
