How do you generate your own internet leads?

Several posts have discouraged buying internet leads and recommended creating your own leads. Sounds complicated and difficult to create a website that will stand out. So many have failed. And, how do you get high ranking on google, yahoo, msn, etc.?

If you are looking to generate leads via a website unless you have a huge budget I wouldnt try to compete with the major lead generating companies out there as far as trying to get a high ranking on the seach engines. You would also be looking at getting leads from who knows where instead of the area you work in if you were able to get high rankings.

I do reccomend having a website for people to go to so that you can include it in your local advertising, more and more people want to look something over on the internet rather picking up the phone to call someone, and if they are taking time to fill out a form on your site then you truly have an interested prospect. You will also have control over the quality of your leads instead of leads generated from random pop-ups and banners from totally unrelated sites.

Other ways I have done local internet advertising inexpensively is through online classifieds such as craigslist.
