| A friend of mine rents an apartment in Colorado. There was an electrical problem somewhere in the common area of the complex resulting in a fire that destroyed 12 units. Shouldn't the building's insurance cover all losses since it was not a tenant who caused the fire? Also, during the beginning of the clean up the building was found to have asbestos and they wont let anyone in the burned units remove their belongings due to the asbestos contamination. |

The apt. building will only be responsible for the building and attached things, like cabients, carpet, things they own...it is the responiblity of the tenants to insure their own personal property via a renters policy...might be worth a shot to file a claim with the buildings insurer but I doubt it goes anywhere. _________________ "Never, never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well being of a person or animal is at stake. | If the apartment complex was not maintaining the property in good condition then they could also be liable for all the damages from the fire (your friends property). They should also provide alternate housing as your friend has a lease and is paying rent. |
