I'm looking for someone who has purchased a vehicle with a salvage title, from a dealer that purchased it from the insurance companie or auction service and has secured missouri or Illinois registration on that vehicle. When I contacted Il. Sec. of State they said I needed a rebuilder's license, or have a licensed rebuilder do the work on the vehicle with salvage title to secure Il. registration(put it on the road).

Well I am still in the process after buying a salvage motorcycle from a dealer in OH. It hasn't been that hard once I understood the BS and bureaucracy that entailed. First I went to the currency exchange to get the title for the bike switched from my name and salvage to an IL one. Several refused anything but I did find one that at least would process the ppaerwork and issue me a temp license palte. This the cherry or gold . Now I can get around and do the necessary BS required. First I had to go to a IDOT safety inspection lane. Did this and got my Rebuilt sticker in 15 min for $25. The next step is where I ran inot the most BS. You do have to get a licensed rebuilder to fill paperwork attesting to repairs even after having the bike totally pass highway safety inspection. This is TOTAL bullshit butit is IL.This must be to protect the asshole unions, or something like that. The repairs needed on my bike were, replace clutch handle and left mirror($125), get a longer bolt bolt for a stipped out riser($2) and a new speedometer as odometer no longer worked($181). Damage was minimized because of highway pegs so engine was spotless.None of these repairs required any real mechanical knowlege but according to the State needed to be done or certified by a licensed rebuilder. What a laugh. How my motorcycle was totalled is beyond me in the first place. It was obviously dropped on the left side. Small dent in fuel tank, two screw holes and samll dents in rear fender, broken cluch handle, broken odometer, and partially stripped riser bolt that totalled a 2005 vtx1300r. Highly unlikely. Granted replacement tank painted, $1600, and fender $1200 hardly add up to the value of the bike-$6500-$7000. The riser problem was proabably mis diagnosed as broken forks in order for any damage to approch a totalled value. So the work I did was someting a HS kid cold have done, and no parts were essential to real operation of the vehicle. What was smart is that I did take pictures of the damaged areas before fixing them so I have before and after. I did find a licensed repair shop to inspect and verify my work for $50 and since I already got a temp tag I didn't need them to take the bike for State Police inspection, I could. A lot of BS but my appt with State Police is scheduled for Wed and all the stuff I need is done.
