Absolutely right, though the cost may vary between the companies. Sr-22 is required for the high-risk drivers and honestly not many automobile insurance companies offer the Sr-22 coverage. Hence you need to pay the premium for the sr-22, which is normally higher than the regular auto policy.

BTW, quite an impressive list, Ohio Laughing

I've visited several rating and comparison sites like and Progressive does usually rank the highest. However, as roddick states, rates may very so it's still a good idea to shop around.

The SR22 fee is generally pretty cheap. It's the policy it's attached to than can be cheap or expensive.

The SR22 is just a filing by the carrier that promises the states DOI that any change is status of the policy will be reported directly to the state.

Usually it's the reason behind the SR22 requirement that will determine the cost of the policy. If it's for a DUI, or another major traffic offense, you see the policy premium go up.

The reason for the SR22 is generally for a license reinstatement. In Texas, there are several instances that can cause the suspension of a driver's license that do not pertain to a driving offense. If a minor is ticketed for having alcohol, tobacco or drugs, their license can be suspended. These are not driving offenses, therefore still allowing them to be on a preferred auto insurance policy and have an SR22.

I've also seen people get their license suspended for not providing proof of insurance. They may be required to carry the SR22 for 3 years. They may have had insurance for 6 months by the time they reinstate their license or have the SR22 requirement imposed. This will still allow them to get preferred rates and a no insurance ticket is not considered a moving violation.

The question now is, what was your offense? It may not be that bad, pricewise, to obtain an SR22 filing.

Can someone, please, explain, what a SR22 is? I never heard of it. To make a comment on getting insurance with 'offenses' attached.....I know someone who has a DUI (only 1, though). He goes through Nationwide. He really shopped around..ALOT of insurance companies wouldn't cover him, for this reason. Anyway...I think he said he pays, about, $80.00 (ish) , per month,..for liabilty, anyway. This is in the state of PA..however. Hope this hopes a bit.

sdchargersfan, your friend more than likley also has a sr22...they differ by state, but a very simple explanation is this...the state says this bad driver (or dui, or mulitple tickets), whatever reason they have gotten themselves into some trouble..the state says they only way we will let you drive is to secure an sr22 which is a special endorcment or policy for high risk drivers requiring among other things for the insurance company to immediately inform the state if this persons ins changes at all (meaning generally that they miss a payment) some states require a carrier to also agree to cover this sr22 person for everything that they may do while driving...generally these (sr22) last from 2-3 years depending on what the state/judge have to say. I've never seen any that were cheap...

Thank you, LORI, for the explanation. I DO know that he has a few "mishaps" (that's what HE calls them) but, i don't know what they are. Mmmm....I had a family convicted of his 3rd DUI. This was in the state of CA. He had his drivers license Revoked. He was in his 50's, when this happpened. That situation was a 'mess and a half' with him!!

can my brother who is about to recieve his licensce in ill. with a baid machine use his sr22 from another company other than mine to insure my car. my company says they can but the insurance will go up $70.00-$100.00 a month. his sr22 people says he may insure my car as long as he is the only 1 driving the car and it is parked on his property. i am wondering if we should combine to 1 company or just take my car off of my insurance?

cheap is a relative term.

the best way to get "cheap" insurance is to shop around. Don't forget that sometimes, what you get is what you pay for though, so price shouldn't be the only factor you consider.

fastest and easiest way to make sure you're getting the best price is to get competitive quotes from different providers and compare them.

Fortunately this is pretty easy to do online, all you need is your zipcode to get started and you can get quotes from 3 or more providers pretty much instantly.
